Review: 2024 Subaru Forester e-Boxer

What is it?

The Subaru Forester first rolled off the production line in 1997. Back then, it was a quirky newcomer in the SUV market, designed to be a rugged, all-weather vehicle that didn’t compromise on comfort. Over the years, it has undergone several transformations, each iteration refining its balance of practicality, reliability, and adventure-readiness.

The Forester’s roots are firmly planted in Subaru’s rich heritage of all-wheel-drive expertise, stemming from their rally car success in the 1990s. This pedigree ensured the Forester was built to handle rough terrains with ease. Fast forward to 2024, and the latest Forester continues this legacy, packed with modern technology, improved capabilities and a touch of electrification to Subaru’s renowned ruggedness. By incorporating mild hybrid technology, this version adds efficiency and a pinch of eco-consciousness to the Forester’s repertoire, making it an even more appealing option for those who want to tread lightly on the planet without compromising on capability.

On the road

No matter what the surface, the 2024 Forester was a joy to drive on the road, where it delivered a remarkably smooth and composed ride. Unlike some 4x4s that can feel a bit cumbersome or jittery on the motorway, the Forester strikes a brilliant balance between comfort and control.

The latest model benefits from a well-tuned suspension that soaks up the imperfections of the UK's patchwork quilt of roads without breaking a sweat. Whether you're gliding down the M1 or meandering through winding country lanes, the Forester’s handling is precise and predictable. Its steering is light enough for easy manoeuvring in tight city spaces but provides enough feedback to give you confidence on faster, twistier routes.

One of the standout features is Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, which provides excellent grip and stability, even in the wettest of British weather. Coupled with the refined CVT gearbox, the Forester offers a seamless driving experience that's smooth as butter, whether you're commuting to work or embarking on a long-distance journey to the Scottish Highlands.

I wouldn’t worry about parking either, thanks to its excellent visibility and advanced driver assistance features, you can slot it into the tightest of spots.

The e-Boxer’s electric motor adds a layer of smoothness to the driving experience, particularly during stop-start traffic or low-speed manoeuvres. The motor kicks in to provide extra torque when pulling away, making for a quieter and more refined drive in urban settings. You’ll notice this most when cruising through towns or pulling out of tight spots – the transition between electric and petrol power is nearly imperceptible.

On the open road, the e-Boxer system shines during steady cruising, where the electric motor assists the petrol engine to maintain efficiency. It’s not about blistering acceleration, but the system’s focus on seamlessness and efficiency makes it an ideal companion for both daily commutes and longer journeys.

Off-Road

While the Forester's on-road manners are commendable, it wouldn't be a Subaru without some serious off-road credentials. Fortunately, the 2024 Forester does not disappoint when you leave the beaten path behind. This is where the Forester truly shines, transforming from a mild-mannered commuter into an incredibly competent ‘off-roader’ - seriously!

The Forester’s ground clearance is a respectable 220mm, which gives you the confidence to tackle rugged terrains without worrying about the undercarriage getting friendly with the rocks. Add to that the X-Mode system, which optimises the engine, transmission, and braking to help you navigate tricky surfaces like mud, snow, or gravel with ease.

And let’s not forget the hill descent control, which takes the anxiety out of those steep, slippery descents. Just let the Forester do the hard work while you focus on enjoying the adventure. Whether you're exploring the Welsh mountains or getting lost in the Lake District, the Forester’s off-road capability ensures that you're always in safe hands.

Around a decade ago I was invited to my first Subaru media day, it was not far from Stanford and it had been raining for weeks, and this particular venue was sodden.  I was genuinely blown away by the amount of grip they had, even on wet slippery grassy inclines - usually the nemesis for 4x4s.

Interior

Step inside the 2024 Subaru Forester, and you'll be greeted by an interior that’s as practical as it is comfortable. Subaru has clearly put a lot of thought into making the Forester’s cabin a pleasant place to be, whether you’re embarking on a short drive to the shops or a cross-country escapade.

The seats are comfortable and supportive, with ample adjustment options, meaning you can easily find the perfect driving position. The material quality is solid, with durable fabrics and soft-touch surfaces that feel built to last, even when subjected to the wear and tear of outdoor adventures. The top-spec models even come with leather upholstery, adding a touch of luxury to the rugged appeal.

The dashboard is logically laid out, with an 8” touchscreen infotainment system taking centre stage. It’s an intuitive setup, with large, easy-to-read icons and physical buttons for the important stuff, so you’re not faffing about with touch-sensitive controls when you should be focusing on the road. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, allowing you to seamlessly connect your smartphone and access your favourite apps, whether you're navigating to your next campsite or simply queuing up your road trip playlist.

One of the highlights of the Forester’s interior is the sheer amount of space on offer. There’s plenty of headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers, making it a comfortable choice for long journeys. And if you’re planning a family getaway or a weekend of outdoor activities, the boot offers a generous 509 litres of space, which expands to 1,779 litres with the rear seats folded down. That’s more than enough room for all your camping gear, muddy wellies, and maybe even the kitchen sink.

The low loading lip and wide boot opening make it easy to load and unload bulky items. Additionally, clever storage solutions throughout the cabin ensure that smaller items can be neatly stowed away, keeping the interior tidy and organised.

Comfort and Safety

Comfort is not just about the seats and space; it’s also about how the car makes you feel on the road. In this regard, the 2024 Subaru Forester excels, providing a driving experience that’s as stress-free as it gets.

Subaru has gone to great lengths to ensure that the Forester is as quiet as a library on wheels. Road and wind noise are kept to a minimum, allowing you to enjoy your favourite tunes or have a conversation without shouting. As I mentioned earlier, the suspension does an excellent job of cushioning you from the harshest road surfaces, ensuring that you and your passengers arrive at your destination feeling relaxed and refreshed.

When it comes to safety, Subaru has a stellar reputation, and the 2024 Forester continues this tradition. It’s packed with a suite of advanced safety features, making it one of the safest 4x4s on the road. Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is standard across the range, which includes features like adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane-keeping assist. These systems work together to provide an extra pair of eyes on the road, helping to prevent accidents before they happen.

The Forester also comes with a Driver Monitoring System, which uses facial recognition technology to detect signs of driver fatigue or distraction. It’s a bit like having a very attentive passenger who’s always looking out for you, but without the constant nagging!

Engine ’n’ transmission

Under the bonnet, the 2024 Forester houses a 2.0-litre e-Boxer engine + electric motor. This flat-four configuration is a signature Subaru feature, known for its low centre of gravity, which contributes to better stability and handling.

The Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) ensures smooth acceleration and optimal fuel efficiency. That said, CVT’s aren’t renowned for the sporty prowess, plant your foot and the revs will rise to around 6,000rpm and it can feel quite dramatic. But as I’ve mentioned, the Forester is more about comfort than speed.

Let’s face it: fuel costs and environmental concerns are top of mind for many drivers these days. Subaru has taken note, and the e-Boxer system aims to strike a balance between performance and eco-friendliness.

The Forester e-Boxer achieves up to 35 mpg (WLTP) on combined cycles, which is respectable for a 4x4 of its size. While it may not rival the fuel-sipping figures of a plug-in hybrid, the mild hybrid system offers noticeable improvements over purely petrol-powered SUVs. And because it’s self-charging, you can enjoy these savings without worrying about finding a charging station or planning your journeys around electric range.

When it comes to emissions, the Forester e-Boxer is kinder to the environment, emitting 185g/km of CO2. While not groundbreaking in the world of hybrids, this figure is a step in the right direction for those who want a greener 4x4 without sacrificing off-road prowess.

Conclusion

In the crowded market of 4x4s and SUVs, the 2024 Subaru Forester stands out as a vehicle that truly offers the best of both worlds. It’s a versatile and capable 4x4 that’s perfectly suited to the diverse demands of life in the UK. Whether you’re navigating the urban jungle, exploring the countryside, or simply ferrying the kids to school, the Forester is up to the task, delivering a blend of practicality, comfort, and ruggedness that’s hard to beat.

The e-Boxer isn’t just a step forward for Subaru but also for drivers who want an eco-conscious SUV that doesn’t shy away from adventure. With its mild hybrid technology, it’s a smarter, cleaner, and greener way to explore the UK’s roads and trails. While it may not rewrite the hybrid rulebook, the e-Boxer proves that a little electrification can go a long way in enhancing efficiency without losing what makes a Forester a Forester.

So, if you’re looking for a 4x4 that can handle whatever you throw at it with a smile on its face, the 2024 Subaru Forester deserves a spot on your shortlist. It’s a reliable companion for all seasons and all reasons – a true go-anywhere, do-anything vehicle that’s ready for whatever lies ahead.
